Learning the craft of writing has many facets. I’m a great believer in practice as the core of learning. But whilst keeping up a regular writing routine, it’s good to study, bit by bit, some tools of the trade.

Rhetoric has some wonderful tools. Many of its devices we might use instinctively, but studying it gives us greater control. Besides that, it can be fun to play around with devices like anthimeria (change of use: nouns or adjectives are changed into verbs, for example ’texting’) or metaphors (‘his eyes were dark lakes’) or similes (‘she was like a puppy with a blue rinse’).

Rhetorical devices are divided into 2 major groups: Tropes and Schemes. I want to introduce them in the next few weeks, one post per trope or scheme. I hope they will inspire you!
